Client protection

Regulation and entities

Your protection depends on which company holds your account, and that depends on where you live. Each row is one licensed company. What regulation means

Websites

Official websites

  • xm.com
  • trading-point.com

Type the address yourself or use a bookmark. Check it matches the website listed for the firm on the regulator’s register.

Watch out for look-alike sites

We have not recorded any look-alike sites for XM. That does not mean none exist.

A clone firm copies a real broker’s name, licence number and branding to take deposits. The register shows the genuine firm, so the surest check is the contact details: if the website, email or phone number you were given is not the one on the register, treat it as a clone. Accounts and costs

Cost per lot = typical EUR/USD spread × $10 + round-turn commission, for one standard lot (100,000 units) in busy hours. Swap and other fees are extra. Trading costs explained

Leverage and margin

Leverage lets you open a position bigger than your deposit, so losses grow as fast as gains. The caps below are the most XM allows; you can always use less.

Leverage by asset class not yet checked. Headline retail leverage: Up to 1:1000 (XM Global Limited); EU retail clients are limited to 1:30 on major pairs.

Features

Strengths

  • Low minimum deposit of $5 on the Standard and Ultra Low accounts
  • Negative balance protection on all accounts, according to XM's account page
  • EU clients can contract with a CySEC-licensed company (licence 120/10)

Watch out for

  • XM's global site names XM Global Limited, which it says is regulated by the FSC of Belize (licence 8557558). We could not confirm this licence on the Belize FSC's online register on 2026-10-20, so we do not list it.
  • Leverage of up to 1:1000 on the global site magnifies losses as much as gains
  • The Standard account is marketed with deposit bonuses; read the bonus terms before you accept one
  • XM no longer holds a UK licence (the FCA register shows its passport as cancelled) and its former Australian company now trades as Trading.com Markets

Overview

XM is a broker brand of the Trading Point group, founded in 2009. It offers MetaTrader 4 and 5 accounts on currency pairs, indices, commodities and shares, and is known for a very low minimum deposit. The company you deal with depends on the site you sign up on, so check which company is named there before you open an account.

Regulation and safety

The global site at xm.com is run by XM Global Limited. XM says it is regulated by the FSC of Belize under the Securities Industry Act 2021, licence 8557558. Belize’s register runs as a log-in web app that would not load for us, so we could not confirm the licence. We have left it off the regulator list until we can. Belize would count as an offshore regulator in any case.

Three other group companies are on their registers. Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd holds CySEC licence 120/10. Trading Point MENA Limited is licensed by the DFSA in Dubai, on a matched-principal basis. XM ZA (Pty) Ltd is an authorised financial services provider in South Africa. XM no longer holds a UK licence: the FCA register shows Trading Point’s UK passport cancelled in December 2023. Read how broker regulation works and use check a broker before you deposit.

Costs

XM’s account page lists a $5 minimum on Standard and Ultra Low and $10,000 on Shares. The Ultra Low account is pitched at high-volume traders, with lower spreads and swaps. We did not find typical EUR/USD spreads published as fixed figures, so compare live quotes on a demo. The trading costs guide explains what to add up.

Platforms and tools

MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and the XM app. XM also offers copy trading. See MT4 vs MT5.

Deposits and withdrawals

Payment options depend on your country and the XM company you join. Withdrawals normally go back to the method you deposited with.

Who it may suit

The set-up fits traders who want to start small on MetaTrader. If you live in the EU you can sign with the CySEC company. Elsewhere you would join XM Global, whose licence we could not confirm, so weigh that before you deposit.

How to open an account

The steps as we checked them. Never deposit until you have confirmed the licence.

  1. Check which company you will join

On the global site you join XM Global Limited (Belize). EU residents join Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd (CySEC), and clients of the Dubai site join Trading Point MENA Limited (DFSA). The company is named in your client agreement.

  2. Pick an account

Standard and Ultra Low start from $5; the Shares account needs $10,000. All three offer negative balance protection, hedging and an Islamic option.

  3. Verify and practise

Verify your identity, then test your strategy on a demo account before trading real money.

XM: common questions

Is XM regulated?

Parts of the group are. On 2026-10-20 we found Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd licensed by CySEC (120/10), Trading Point MENA Limited by the DFSA (F003484) and XM ZA (Pty) Ltd authorised by the FSCA (FSP 49976). XM Global Limited, which runs the global site, says it is regulated in Belize, but we could not confirm that on the register.

Which XM company will I join?

Most clients outside the EU who sign up on xm.com join XM Global Limited in Belize. EU residents join the CySEC company, and the Dubai site uses Trading Point MENA Limited. Check the name in your client agreement.

What is the minimum deposit?

$5 for the Standard and Ultra Low accounts and $10,000 for the Shares account, or the same in your deposit currency.

Can I lose more than I deposit?

XM says all its accounts have negative balance protection, so losses should be capped at the money in the account. High leverage still means you can lose that money very quickly.
