Lesson 6 of 7 · 8 min
Handling losing streaks
Every method has them. The streak itself is not the danger; what you do during it is. A plan for sitting through it.
By the end you'll be able to
- Predict how long a normal streak can be for a given win rate
- Tell a normal streak from a broken method, using the journal
- Follow a step-down rule that protects the account until the streak ends

Six losses in a row. The method that worked for three months suddenly looks broken, and every instinct says change something. This lesson is about why the instinct is wrong and what to do instead.
Streaks are arithmetic
A method with a 40% win rate loses 60% of the time. The chance of six straight losses is 0.6 to the power of six, about 4.7%: roughly once every 21 trades at that point in the sequence. Over a few hundred trades, six in a row is close to certain and eight is likely. Nothing has to go wrong for it to happen.
For comparison: at 1% you keep 90%, at 5% you keep 60%, at 10% you keep 35%.
Ten losses at the chosen risk. At 1–2% a long streak is a dent; at 5% or more it is a crisis that changes how you trade.
The streak is survivable or not depending on one thing decided long before it started: risk per trade.
Normal streak or broken method?
The journal answers this. Pull the last fifty trades and check:
- Were the losing trades valid setups? If yes, the method is doing what it does and the streak is variance.
- Has anything in the market changed? A new trend regime, a central-bank shift, a change in volatility. Methods do stop working, but usually gradually and for a reason you can name.
- Did you follow the plan on each one? If the losses are plan-broken trades, the streak is behaviour, not method.
If all three answers say “normal”, the only correct action is to keep going at the same size.
Try it
Each run uses the same settings with different luck. Run it several times: the shape changes, the drawdowns don't go away.
Notice how often a profitable method shows a losing streak of six or more inside 100 trades. Run it ten times and count.
The step-down rule
For traders who find a streak hard to sit through, a middle path: after four straight losses, halve the size until two consecutive wins, then restore it. The method keeps running, the journal keeps filling, and the account is protected while confidence recovers. What you never do is increase size to “get it back faster”.
What would you do?
Six losses in a row, all valid setups, all plan followed. Your account is down 6%. A friend suggests a new indicator that 'would have avoided four of those'. What do you do?
Quick check
Question 1 of 3
At a 45% win rate, is five straight losses a sign the method is broken?
Question 2 of 3
The journal shows the streak's losses were all plan-broken trades. The problem is:

After four straight losses, the step-down rule says:
