Lesson 2 of 11 · 10 min

Setting up your platform and charts

Build a clean, repeatable workspace once (one platform, a short watchlist, a saved chart template and safe default settings) so every session starts the same way.

By the end you'll be able to

  • Build a watchlist and a saved chart template you use for every session
  • Convert your platform's server time to your local time and know when the daily candle closes
  • Set safe defaults (one-click trading off, minimum volume, price alerts) on your demo account

Enrolling is free. Your progress, quiz scores and certificate are kept in your account, on every device.

  • Lesson videos for members
  • A certificate when you finish

You open the platform, and 28 pairs, five indicators and last week’s lines stare back. Ten minutes later you have read a lot and decided nothing. This lesson builds a workspace you set up once and then open the same way every day.

One platform, one short watchlist

Pick one platform and stay with it for the whole 90 days. The platforms lesson compares them, and our MT4 vs MT5 guide covers the two most common. Install it on the device you will really trade from, and open a demo account with the balance you plan to trade live.

Then cut the watchlist to one to three pairs and hide the rest. Every extra pair is another chart to read, and another reason to trade something you have not prepared.

A chart template you save once

What changed

  • Indicators6 → 1
  • Drawn lines14 → 2
  • Panels to read3 → 1
  • Question to answer“Which of these 20 things matters?” → “Is price at a level, with the trend?”

A sensible default template

  • OnCandlesticks
  • OnOne or two moving averages (here, the 50-period)
  • OnKey levels marked on the higher timeframe (daily), then viewed on H4
  • OnPair, timeframe and current price visible
  • OffSession and day separators
  • OffOne-click trading, so every order passes a confirm window
  • OffExtra oscillators, unless your written plan uses them

With this many lines on screen, there is a reason to buy and a reason to sell at almost any price.

The same illustrative EUR/USD four-hour chart, cluttered and clean. Tap through to 'Your template' for a sensible default to save on your own platform.

A clean template has three things: candlesticks, one or two moving averages (a 50-period one is a common choice), and the key support and resistance levels you mark on the daily chart. Save it as your default template, so you never rebuild it by hand.

A new tool only joins the template when your written plan uses it.

The same timeframes, in the same order

Pick a timeframe stack and use it every day, top down. A common one is D1 → H4 → H1: the daily chart for direction and levels, the four-hour chart for the setup, the one-hour chart only to fine-tune an entry. The multi-timeframe lesson explains why the order matters, and the chart routine lesson turns it into a five-minute read.

Same pairs, template and order make today’s chart comparable with yesterday’s.

Your clock and the platform’s clock

Open now: …

The four trading sessions in your local time. Your platform's clock may show a different hour: many run on a server time set so the daily candle closes at 17:00 New York time.

Forex trades around the clock, so the daily candle has to close at an agreed hour. Most platforms use 17:00 New York time, and many set their server clock to GMT+2 in winter and GMT+3 in summer so that close lands at 00:00. Some use another time zone, so check yours: when a new daily candle opens, note the time on the platform clock and on your own.

Write the gap down once, so your journal and alerts never mix two clocks.

Safety settings before your first order

  • One-click trading off. Every order then opens a confirm window, so a stray tap cannot open a trade.
  • Default volume at the minimum, often 0.01 lots. If you do click by mistake, the trade is tiny.
  • Price alerts at your levels. An alert tells you price has reached a level, without opening a trade, so you can stop watching. It is a prompt to check your plan, never an instruction to trade.

Practise on demo with exactly these settings, so the live account feels familiar on day one.

With leverage, small mistakes become large losses quickly. A minimum default volume keeps a slip a lesson, not a setback.

Try it

Work through this list on your own demo platform now. Ticks are saved in this browser, so you can finish it over two sessions.

Notice how most of the list is done once: after today, a session is simply opening the template, reading three timeframes in order and checking your alerts.
